An island country in East Asia, Japan is often referred to as the Land of the Rising Sun. Its four largest islands, Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku account for ninety seven per cent of japans land area, it has the tenth largest population in the world, and Tokyo, the capital, is the largest metropolitan area in the world.
The food is some of the most flavoursome and diverse in the world. Each region has different seasonal changes, and therefore offers different produce year round. Try some of the traditional meals, such as sushi and tempura to really get a feel of the authenticity of the country. Sukiyaki, one of the more elaborate forms of sushi is prepared in front of you at the table, and includes dishes such as thin slices of beef fried with vegetables and vermicelli, or sashimi; raw sliced fish eaten with soy sauce.
Japan can be expensive to travel to if you have not planned your journey well. If you are travelling within the country then use local airlines to save yourself money. Purchase a rail pass rather than getting taxis, as they are much cheaper and the rail is very reliable. Avoid popular tourist areas when dining; as with any country, if you eat in the more popular areas the prices will be higher. Find where the locals eat and enjoy the best food in the city!!
